What happens if you forget to pay your bills?

A payment notice is as negative as anything can be, everyone knows that. Kronofogden is something you don’t want anything to do with. Why are we so scared of them and what actually happens if you forget to pay your bills?

  1. The bill arrives: You usually have up to 30 days to pay
  2. You get a reminder: As a good measure you get a reminder to pay your bill, often with a fee. Always call the company as soon as possible if you think there's been a mistake or if you won’t be able to pay in time.
  3. Debt collection: If the company don’t get their money in time, your bill gets handled by a debt collection agency. Further fees and interest gets added in this process.
  4. Kronofogden: In the next step your bill gets sent to Kronofogden. You can still save the situation if you call and settle the debt or figure out the mistake.
  5. Payment notice: If the bill reaches Kronofogden and the debt isn't paid, they’ll decide on a payment notice. See the action as a verdict in the matter. The payment notice is then registered by the credit check companies.

If you forget to pay your bills, after several reminders, you get a payment notice. The payment notice is registered with the credit check companies and stays for 3 years. 

What happens if I get a payment notice?

  • You can’t take new loans or use credit
  • You can’t part pay or pay later
  • It may block you from renting an apartment
