Set smart goals

Smart is an acronym for: specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. Smart goals is a model that's being used and recommended within a range of fields. Whatever you’re planning the project gets a little bit easier if you break it down and reflect on each category. The method is a great way of getting an overview of your goal.

Specific

First of all you need to put in words what you want to achieve. Concretize your goal and you’ll have a clearer path toward it. If your goal is too unclear you won’t be able to work structured with it.

Measurable

Think of ways to measure your goal. If you can’t you need to rephrase it. When you have a way of tracking your progress you can set interim goals and milestones. Achieve them and celebrate the smaller wins. If your goals are measurable you don’t have to succeed every time, reach 50% of your goal, learn, and succeed next time.

Achievable

Make sure that your goal is actually achievable. Pick a task that is hard but doable. Don’t make it too big, or you will fail before you even start.

Realistic

Even if your goal is achievable, it also have to be realistic. Set a goal that you can handle both physically and mentally. Plan your project with your own abilities in mind. If your goal is unrealistic it will be hard to work towards it with your health in check.

Time bound

At last you have to decide on when you want to be finished with your goal. An end to the project makes it easier to plan around. Track your progress with interim goals and your goal will seem much more manageable. A timeline also makes it easier to plan around your goal, knowing how much time you need to spend on it.

Good luck with your goals!
